The first webinar in the series put up by the GECO-Seqlab Project with Dr. Kirstyn Brunker from the University of Glasgow. Here, Dr. Brunker discussed the use of Oxford Nanopore's game-changing technology on sequencing that "Enables the analysis of anything, by anyone, anywhere". She shared how she utilized this technology in her study on rabies in Tanzania, Kenya and the Philippines, which allowed her to generate sequences while on the field proving that genomic sequencing is obtainable, and can be performed even without a specialized facility. “The crucial role of genomic surveillance in pandemic response is highlighted in disease mitigation and containment. The GECO project (short for Genomic epidemiology of COVID in the Philippines), which is a collaboration between the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine and the University of Glasgow, aims to enhance public health surveillance and to provide clear and practical recommendation on disease elimination,” explained Dr. Brunker.
